The rain, humidity and sunshine we’ve been experiencing over the past few months also happens to be the perfect weather for grass to grow quickly.

I felt like every time I looked away for a minute my yard needed another mow.

The only people who were happy were those with horses, but even for them the sodden and boggy paddocks aren’t much fun.

Recently I heard about Jamie, a pregnant mum from New Beith, who wanted to host a baby shower at her local park.

Unfortunately, she found the grass too long for the backyard cricket match she’d planned.

So her husband Jayden and her neighbour Rick took matters into their own hands, using Rick’s ride-on mower, to tidy up the area.

If Jamie had called Logan City council and told us she needed the park mowed for an event, we would have done everything we could to prioritise that job for her.

Since January, council crews have cut more than 24 million square metres of grass.

That’s almost 300 times the size of the Logan Hyperdome – just to give you a sense of how much mowing that is.

It’s not glamorous work.

We brought in three extra contractors, in addition to our regular crews, plus staff in other parts of council who jumped on a mower to get the job done.

They did hundreds of hours of overtime and we enlisted teams of mower mechanics to keep our equipment in the field.

I also want to thank our residents for your patience.

We made the call to prioritise mowing over other parks maintenance, because we knew how important it was to you.

We’re catching up on those jobs now as well.

As the weather cools, the rate of grass growing will become much slower.

Lawns will become much easier to manage in people’s yards and Council’s parks – so we’ll be back on top of keeping Logan’s green spaces tidy very soon.

Remember, next time you spot a public space that urgently needs mowing, please report it using Snap Send Solve (snapsendsolve.com) or give customer service a call during business hours on 3412 3412.
