Flood reprieve for motorists travelling through Munruben is edging closer, with construction of the new Norris Creek Bridge less than a year from completion.

Ninety large beams, known as girders, were recently installed using a 500-tonne crane – the latest “milestone” since late last year.

With the number of cars travelling along Chambers Flat Road predicted to increase by almost 50 per cent in the next 20 years, Logan City council is aiming to upgrade its safety and “flood resilience”.

To do so, the Norris Creek Bridge has been raised eight metres.

While water levels are expected to peak under the new bridge during a one in 20-year Logan River flood event, council said “a more severe flood” would surpass it.

Council’s modelling indicates there would be “no adverse impacts” during floods and storms below and including one in 100-year events.

Almost four kilometres of Chambers Flat Road will be upgraded from the Mount Lindesay Highway to just north of Kings Way.

The upgrades will aim to improve residential driveway access and make journey times shorter.

The project is also:

  • widening the road to 3.5m each way, with 3m sealed shoulders
  • installing turning lanes at the Kings Way and Greenvale Rd intersections
  • improving sight distances at bends and crests.

When the bridge opens towards the end of the year, the one-lane, one-way temporary diversion currently in place will end.
