The story we’ve featured on the front page this week transcends sport.

It is true that there will be a soccer game, and at the end of it there will be a result.

There have been movies made about teams that have done the seemingly impossible, tagged with underdog status to defeat much more fancied rivals.

All of those movies have a sub-plot – stories of determination and courage, hurt and despair, elation and jubilation.

And that’s really where the story of Logan Metro FC begins. The team typifies a celebration of our multicultural population in Logan, and it gives everyone in the city to find their voice and be proud of where they live.

A date and time hasn’t yet been set for the game against Lions FC. Rest assured, we’ll let everyone know as soon as it is.

MyCity Logan was lucky enough to meet the president of the club Samuel Escobar who himself was an immigrant in 1989.

He’s built a club which prides itself on mentoring young immigrants and refugees, helping them find comfort through sport.

And while there will always be ambitions for their team to work their way into Premier League, the friendships and security they offer as a club are paramount.

It would be a great story for Logan if people lined 10 deep at Compton Park to cheer on their team against the giants of the Queensland soccer world.

Regardless of whether you like soccer or not, this is about so much more than that. It’s about showing your appreciation for those at the core of our communities, and helping celebrate who we are.

It’s about a bond which will help spread positive messages about our city. It’s about getting to the grassroots of social issues, if when tackled early will stem crime and reassure families that there is help around every corner.

Let the football be the excuse for us all to rub shoulders and cheer as one.
