Two of Logan roads are set to undergo major safety upgrades starting this year.

$5.5 million will be spent on upgrading the intersection at Springwood Connection Road (Wembley Road) and Kingston Road at Logan Central.

It will include an off-road bike lane, upgrades to the pedestrian crossings and another left-hand turn lane to meet growing capacity.

The intersection of Beaudesert-Beenleigh Road and Janine Drive at Bahrs Scrub will receive $500,000 of safety upgrades – including the addition of a right turning pocket, drainage improvements, enhanced road markings and relocated signage.

The intersections are among 69 other state government-controlled roads chosen for upgrades because of a history of crashes and safety issues.

The transport and main roads minister Bart Mellish said the government’s goal was to reduce road fatalities by 50 per cent and serious injuries by 30 per cent by 2031.

“Making our roads safer is a critical component of our work to reduce road trauma and move towards achieving the targets,” Mr Mellish said.

“Tragically, 277 lives were lost on Queensland roads last year, the third highest total in 10 years.

“We want to see zero deaths on our roads.”

Both Logan projects will be jointly funded by the state and federal governments.

Construction is expected to start in the second half of this year.
