Same old, yet very important message

Spare a moment of thought for those in the police marketing teams who, every holiday period, have to think of a way to tell the same people the same thing.

Road safety messaging is directed at those who generally won’t listen, in an effort to protect those who generally do the right thing.

Operation Cold Snap is an innovative way of again telling people not to speed, not to drink and drive, and to be alert at all times when on long journeys.

History tells us that road safety during school holiday periods is paramount. Because driving long distances is risky business.

Let’s hope that by reaching the more sensible portion of the community, that the safety messages will resonate through to the rest of the community.

Let’s hope that Operation Cold Snap negates the brain fade of those who think they’re clever by travelling at 20km more than the speed limit to save a few minutes on travel time.

Let’s hope that these school holidays no innocent people – those who do listen to the safety warnings – become a senseless road statistic at the expense of a recalcitrant.

These school holidays will be yet another time when people are travelling within their own state. Many agree that one of the good things to come out of Covid is that people are able to explore their own country more closely.

But from tip to toe, Queensland is quite often a long road, and one which should be travelled with caution.
