FOR some, Meadowbrook Golf Club might still be a hidden secret, tucked away off the highway and Loganlea Road.
If that’s the case, it won’t be like that for much longer.
The club has strategically ramped up its efforts to modernise its facilities, and to provide members with all the lavish extras which are now expected of a metropolitan golf club.
They’ve most recently added a mini golf course. Before that, they built a golf academy – facilities which are used to develop junior golfers, and improve the skills of hacks and pros alike.
They’ve also ramped up their function offerings for the likes of weddings and corporate days.
Add all that to a stylish bistro, and you’ve got a destination, rather than a “little option just around the corner where people go for a hit”.
A bar has always been a necessity at a golf course, but in this case, the chef has given the menu some thought – taking it beyond the sandwich, burger and token salad.
A tapas selection offers up three choices for a reasonable $26. Wagyu meatballs, calamari, porcini and truffle, pumpkin flowers and Canarian potatoes is a list which offers diversity and variety.
The pumpkin flowers filled with Moroccan spiced pumpkin tzatsiki is something more likely found in a themed restaurant than a bistro.
Salads are great after some exercise, and pork belly with crispy noodles is as hearty as it is healthy. Thai beef, caesar and baby beetroot salad with pumpkin and feta is a lengthy choice.
Main meals take the choice to another level. Something filling but not too heavy are street tacos. Beef or chicken are available, but battered fish is the way most Mexicans would do it, blended with pico de gallo, avocado, roasted corn, coriander and lime.
Sure, there are more traditional burgers, steaks and schnitzels. If you’re looking for something to take you through the rest of the day, slow cooked pork belly is $26 and large.
A 300 gram rib fillet steak will set you back $36, but beyond that, most other things on the menu are priced between $18 and $28.
Order at the bar, and after that it’s table service, all friendly and accommodating.
Early-rising golfers will be delighted by the creativity which has gone into the breakfast menu – corn and zucchini fritters, a “keto good start”, and a “golfers breakfast burger” for those on the go.
There’s no doubt Meadowbrook Golf Club is on the rise, and from a foodie point of view, it’s great to see the menu coming along for the ride.
