It may not feel like it, but we’re starting to climb over Queensland’s Omicron peak.
A number of key COVID indicators have stabilised this past week, including case numbers and hospitalisations, giving us hope this current wave is reaching its conclusion.
But it’s been a tough summer, and certainly not the relaxed holiday period we were all eager for and deserving of after two long years.
However, it could have been far worse, if not for the high uptake of vaccinations among the community, and Queenslanders continuing to follow the health advice.
In particular, the amount of COVID boosters already administered has played a huge role in flattening this latest curve.
To the 1.3 million Queenslanders who’ve rolled up their sleeves once more, thank you.
If you’re over 18 and eligible for your booster, please visit a Queensland Health vaccination location, book via qld.gov.au (search ‘Boosters’), or find your nearest private provider using findapharmacy.com.au.
You don’t need to go back to where you received your first shots, you can get your booster anywhere, and with the waiting period reduced to three months it’s easier than ever to get boosted against COVID-19.
I’ve always believed Queensland isn’t just the Sunshine State, we’re also the Sunrise State, a place where hard work and determination means tomorrow will be better than today.
And when it comes to the Omicron strain of COVID, there is sunshine on the horizon.
But we need to stay vigilant, particularly with those little things that have made a big difference in slowing the spread of the virus.
Mask wearing. Hand hygiene. Social distancing. Please keep it up, because it keeps COVID at bay.
Queensland Chief Health Officer Dr John Gerard said recently the fantastic response from Queenslanders has lessened the peak of Omicron and reduced its impacts, which were modelled to be more severe.
In summary – we’re winning the battle, but we’ve got to keep up the fight against this invisible enemy.
And that includes getting more of our 5-11 year olds vaccinated, with those vaccination rates currently sitting at a little over 30 per cent.
We delayed the start of the 2022 school year to give families the opportunity to vaccinate their kids, so please use this window if you haven’t already.
You can book your child’s vaccination at vaccinebookings.health.qld.gov.au.
And if you have any questions, Queensland Health have a wealth of information and answers available at health.qld.gov.au (search ‘COVID-19 vaccines and children’).
