I WAS appalled at the article on the suspended sentence handed down to former Logan mayor, Luke Smith.
Not even one single day in jail?
There is no doubt, this guy should’ve gotten jail time – not a get out of jail free ticket.
Typical that our government officials don’t have to pay the price for their crimes – us laymen have to be accountable and they should have to be too, not given total lenience because their own actions had led them to suffer from depression?
He was clearly corrupt and how exactly is a few hours of community service going to ensure he pays the price for the crime he committed?
There is almost no point dragging things through courts and corruption commissions etc if all that is going to happen in the end is a slap on the wrist.
Smith was supposed to be a community leader that we looked up to, and all the while he was working behind the scenes to fatten his piggy bank – absolutely gross misconduct.
Who will police the government?
These guys get so many chances – I say put them in a cell and throw away the key, as soon as it’s discovered they’re doing something wrong.
Disgrace.
