UPDATE: Truck driver and eight students involved in M1 bus crash “home and well”

Eight of 10 students hospitalised in Wednesday’s M1 bus crash have been discharged from hospital, a Metro South Health spokesperson has confirmed.

“All the students [in Metro South Health care] have been discharged – they are all home and well,” the spokesperson said.

Two other students remain in hospital for ongoing care, with one believed to be requiring surgery at Queensland Children’s Hospital.

A spokesperson for the children’s hospital didn’t confirm whether the student needed surgery, but said they were in a stable condition.

The driver of the truck has also been discharged from Gold Coast University Hospital.

The Logan City bus, full of Calamvale school students, was hit by a truck towing a trailer while stopped near the Beenleigh exit on the M1 southbound at around 9.35am.

The students were reportedly on an end-of-year trip to Gold Coast theme park Wet’n’Wild.

A spokesperson from the Department of Education commended the “selfless actions of the witnesses and school staff who offered immediate assistance and support to those involved in yesterday’s bus incident”.

“The majority of students and staff treated yesterday have been released from hospital and are safe and well in the care of their families. Two students remain in hospital for ongoing care,” the spokesperson said.

“The school continues to provide updates and support to the students that were on the bus and their families, and to the greater school community.”

Queensland Ambulance Service senior operations supervisor Scott Harris said 60 people, including 55 students aged between 14 and 16, were assessed by paramedics at the scene.

“The injuries were fairly moderate,” Mr Harris said.

“There were some fractures and abrasions.”

Eight students were taken to Logan Hospital with minor injuries.

Two others, including a student and the truck driver, were taken to Gold Coast University Hospital – one with facial injuries.

A teenager with leg and head injuries was taken to Queensland Children’s Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

“There are a lot of traffic delays on the motorway… because of this accident,” Mr Harris said.

“As you would expect with a bus and truck colliding, it took up two – if not three – of the lanes.”

Seven ambulances attended the scene.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash or any dashcam in the area to assist their investigation.
