It goes without saying that the City of Logan has a rich sporting history.
This was apparent at the 2021 City of Logan Sports Awards on Saturday night.
The awards are a chance to come together to recognise and pay tribute to our sporting stars and all those people behind the scenes who make community sport possible week in, week out.
We were very fortunate to be joined by some very special guests on Saturday night including Olympic medallists Logan Martin, Ashley Moloney and Jodie Henry, and NRL legend Cameron Smith.
Our young sporting stars have many wonderful roles models to look up to across a variety of sports.
Sport is a great way for children to learn teamwork and responsibility, perseverance, discipline, and a heathy dose of competition. It provides guidance and it is character building.
I’m a firm believer that being part of a sporting club has many benefits to shaping us as people.
I also know that so many of our sporting club are run by volunteers – these are the heroes who turn dreams into reality for so many of our budding young sports stars.
This year’s awards have special significance in not only an Olympic year but also a time when community sport has been so disrupted.
There were many deserving winners on the night, and it was a privilege to celebrate the achievements of our sporting community after the awards were postponed last year due to COVID restrictions.
Sport brings communities together and this has never been more apparent than earlier this year when Logan Martin, Ash Moloney, Mollie O’Callaghan and Genevieve Gregson were representing Australia at the Tokyo Olympics – biggest sporting stage in the world.
While we were placed into a COVID lockdown back in August our attention turned to the television to watch these young sporting stars make our city proud.
Not only did they excel in their chosen sport, more importantly they did this with grace and dignity.
As we head to Brisbane 2032 I have no doubt the City of Logan will produce some of our rising stars as the world’s best come to our own backyard.
Council is committed to creating pathways for future champions and I’m sure we will see many more in the years to come.
