Shopping centre opening a real community affair

Residents are rejoicing at the news of a new supermarket.

While fresh veges and choice beyond the corner store are important, the signs of a Woolworths at Bannockburn are of growth – more houses, more people, and potential higher property value.

Along with a new supermarket comes a shopping centre, which also opened last Thursday.

Bannockburn Village has a BWS, coffee shop, boutique nail bar, new medical centre and dental surgery.

Front and centre is a mural by indigenous artist Casey Coolwell-Fisher.

So confident is the supermarket giant that they’ve invested $25 million into the shopping centre. Locally, that means about 50 jobs. For visitors, it means “direct to boot” and pick up services.

Woolworths Bannockburn store manager Jacob Lohrisch said: “My team and I are delighted to offer the local
Bannockburn community a great new shopping experience, with a brilliant fresh food offer and the convenience they’re
looking for.

“I’m celebrating 18 years of service at Woolworths this year, so I’m particularly thrilled our store will be providing more
than 100 local jobs, including 50 new roles for local residents.”

Even the politicians are jumping on board the new centre.

Federal Member for Forde Bert van Manen said the shopping hub was a much-needed service.

“I welcome this investment from Woolworths Group into our community, and acknowledge their strong ongoing
contribution to the City of Logan,” he said.

Macalister MP Melissa McMahon said jobs were particularly important for young people in a growing region.

Benefits are well spread. Some of the milk comes from the Scenic Rim, and Gotzinger Smallgoods from Yatala.

“We’re also proud to support local community groups through our stores and are focused on minimising food waste,” Mr Lohrisch said.

“We’re partnering with OzHarvest to help provide meals to people in need. Last year, Woolworths helped OzHarvest provide more than 2 million meals in Queensland and we’re looking forward to serving up more in the year ahead.”

In a push to be greener, LED lights have been installed, and there’s a carbon-efficient refrigeration and air-conditioning system. People in surrounding areas can drop in soft plastics, batteries, phones and other recyclables.

It’s all part of a Bannockburn Shopping Centre bid to become a 4-Star Green Star development rated by the Green Building Council of Australia and includes solar panels and rainwater harvesting to reduce the environmental impact of the centre’s operations.

Opening hours for Woolworths Bannockburn is Monday – Saturday 7am – 9pm, and Sunday 9am – 6pm.
