FEW people have lost absolutely everything.
We see/read about families being left destitute after a fire destroyed their home but there are generally friends and neighbours around who are prepared to help.
It’s not like that when disasters like cyclones, landslides, earthquakes and floods strike in third world countries where friends and neighbours are just as badly affected.
International disaster relief organisation Shelter Box was set up to provide timely support in cases like that and Logan woman Sharon Hansen is doing her bit to provide that group with funding.
This month the incoming president of Loganholme Rotary Club will join five other fundraising Rotarians from around Australia to spend five days walking a section of the Northern Territory’s Larapinta Trail to raise funds and awareness.
The trail encompasses 223km and Sharon will cover more than 60km of its mountains, valleys, rivers and desert landscapes
Mount Sondor, one of the Northern Territory’s highest red centre peaks, will be ascended as part of the trek.
“I will be raising funds to try to ensure that no family goes without shelter after disaster strikes,” Sharon said.
“Since 2012 Rotary International has been an official partner with Shelterbox, which is an International disaster relief organisation that provides emergency shelter, tools and essential items to families and communities worldwide in the aftermath of a disaster.”
Sharon has scheduled a High Tea Hat Fundraiser in the Tin Cup Café at the Beenleigh Historical Village for Shelter Box on July 10 where there will be lucky door prizes and raffles, info 0410 592 766.
Sharon said she aims to raise $1000 while on the trek, with her total so far $250.
Donations can be deposited in BSB 633000, account 150964435.
Items provided by Shelterbox include family-size tents, cooking utensils, water filtration units, inflatable solar lights, tools and heavy duty materials designed to be used to repair damaged homes.
A Shelterbox spokesman said: “Our partnership with Rotary International is fundamental to our success.
“That special relationship means we can count on the support of an international network of 12 million Rotarians.”
