IF you have a view on how safety can be improved in the City of Logan, now’s your time to stand up and be heard.
Logan City Council says it only has police statistics to work with, so councillors and staff wanted to hear about unreported crime in people’s day-to-day lives.
Council’s spruiking of public opinion will be done in the form of a survey which will be open for another three weeks, until February 21.
A council statement stated that information gathered from the survey would help shape future community safety and crime prevention activities.
Councillor Laurie Koranski who heads up the council’s lifestyle committee, incorporating safety issues,, said council wanted to better understand how residents felt about safety and crime.
“Most people’s perceptions of safety are influenced by their day-to-day experiences and observations at home and when out and about,” Cr Koranski said.
“Through the survey, we want to find out how they feel in different situations or places.
“Without community feedback we only have Queensland Police Service crime statistics about reported offences and while these are extremely helpful, they do not address unreported crime or safety concerns.”
Council’s community safety officers work with local police, government and non-government agencies and community groups to deliver free crime prevention events and activities.
Some of these include the Safe City awards, support services hubs, educational crime prevention presentations and the Logan Safety Camera Program which provides real-time, 24/7 monitoring, council’s statement said.
There are currently more than 700 safety camera locations throughout Logan, used to help police detect crime and find offenders.
An independent research firm is co-ordinating the survey on council’s behalf. To take part, go to haveyoursaylogan.com.au.
