SHAILER Park State School has been giving future preppies a peek inside their busy classrooms, allowing them and their parents to see children and teachers at work.
They’ve been joining in fun classroom activities and chatting with the early years coordinator.
The next “A Peek at Prep” day will be Friday May 6 from 9am-10am and information is available from Janelle Delahunty at jdela80@eq.edu.au or on 3440 8333.
The school is also hosting a “Prep open day” on Saturday May 14 from 9am-11am, where there will be a free sausage sizzle, along with opportunities to see classrooms, meet teachers and get involved with activities.
There will be a tour of the campus and face painting.
Principal Karen Kuskey said the school had passionate and dedicated teachers who work in professional learning teams.
Throughout their learning, each child is allowed to be involved with a unique response to intervention and enrichment through their “GLOW” (Great Learning Our Way) lessons.
“We have strong community links with our early learning centres,” Ms Kuskey said.
“There’s a chance to learn to read with synthetic phonics and support from the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation, and we’re very proud of our dance club and performance groups that compete across Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
“We have a strong leadership program that starts in Year 4 that helps our students become strong role models. It’s important that children are allowed to transition seamlessly through the year levels, so we have strong transition programs from our prep classrooms right through to Year 7 and high school.
“Everyone at the school knows that the well-being of all our students is paramount, which is why we have a well-being hub supported by a full-time teacher and staff.”
To support students, there’s a 1:1 lap top program for those in Years 4-6.
In addition, the school has a running club, coding club, and gardening club.
There are sporting events throughout the year, including basketball, soccer and netball.
Other programs include a mission to provide “explicit direct instruction”, an instrumental music program from Year 4, and learning through “Age Appropriate Pedagogy”.
“We are all passionate about the exciting things we’re developing at Shailer Park State School,” Ms Kuskey said.
