We know the gaps, let’s fix them

AN interesting report was released this week by the Urban Development Institute of Australia, identifying holes in regional infrastructure throughout the country.

Due to Logan’s likely growth over the next 20 years, we were given a good run.

The report identified holes in education, public transport, logistics, green infrastructure, and water supply.

UDIA’s local chief Gary Hardgrave has never been short of an opinion, but he raises the point in our article today that Logan runs the risk of making the same mistakes that western Sydney made in its long-term planning 20 years ago.

That’s damning. What happened there was that all roads led to Sydney City, neglecting to supply infrastructure to those who lived and worked in the region.

We already see glimpses of that here. People in new suburbs such as Yarrabilba and Flagstone have been built with an ambition in mind that people could work no more than 20 minutes from where they live.

But we all know how hard it can be to get from one side of Logan to the other via public transport. Springwood to Jimboomba or Yarrabilba; Beenleigh to Park Ridge; the list goes on.

It might be possible, but far from convenient for someone wanting to develop a quality work-life balance.

The other salient point was around trades education. We have TAFE, but industry is still struggling to find the number of staff required to sustain and grow their businesses.

The debate is not new. But let’s allow the discussion about solutions to flourish.
