Sporting powerhouses Marsden State High and Mabel Park State High will go to battle on Thursday 23 April for the first-ever Logan Cup – a multisport competition featuring students from Years 7 to 12.
For a full day, school sports teams will compete across five different sports – rugby league, football (soccer), netball, basketball and volleyball – and the results of each contest will count towards deciding which school will lift the prestigious trophy.
Marsden State High School Excellence Head of Department Jacob Stains said the Logan Cup would showcase the best athletes in Logan across two competitive schools.
“The Logan Cup was created to give young athletes in the Logan region a genuine representative-style competition while still playing for their schools,” he said.
“We wanted to bring together talented students from different programs, promoting school pride, healthy rivalry and sporting excellence.”
Mr Stains said the event gave students the opportunity to compete in a more professional and meaningful environment.
“It helps them develop teamwork, resilience and leadership while also exposing them to a higher standard of competition that supports their growth both as athletes and young people,” he said.
“It gives the students who compete in any of the sports some excellent exposure and opportunity to showcase their skills to the community.”
Mr Stains said the athletes had been preparing for the cup throughout the term.
“The athletes have been preparing throughout the term as part of their regular training within their school sports excellence programs,” he said.
“Many of them train multiple times each week, so the Logan Cup becomes a chance for them to put that hard work into practice in a competitive setting.”
Mr Stains said the goal for the Logan Cup was to continue to grow each year.
“We hope to expand the event, strengthen the level of competition and make it a standout sporting event for schools in the Logan region that students aspire to be part of,” he said.
The Logan Cup is supported by Logan City Council and will be hosted at Marsden State High School on Thursday 23 April, from 8am to 5pm.
