Slacks Creek Catchment Group is holding a tree planting day on Sunday 19 April at Riverdale Park at Meadowbrook, as part of its environmental restoration project along the banks of Slacks Creek.
Founded in 2018 by Dan Cole and Anna Markula, the Slacks Creek Catchment Group is a non-profit community working on environmental restoration projects along the Slacks Creek corridor.
“Our work is supported by grants and in previous years we’ve focussed on things like threatened species recovery (Melaleuca irbyana) and mangrove restoration,” Ms Markula said.
“Our current grant project (funded by Logan City Council Envirogrants) is to improve the riparian zone adjacent to native forests that were planted in 2014 at the confluence of Slacks Creek and the Logan River in Riverdale Park, Meadowbrook.”
Ms Markula said the group had been working to improve Riverdale Park for years.

“We have been working on this section of the creek for a few years and are improving the habitat section by section by removing weeds (including weed trees) and adding back native vegetation,” she said.
“The tree planting activity directly helps the local environment by planting native species which increases habitat for wildlife, improves water quality and creates more natural areas.”
‘We also hold monthly working bees where we do weed removal, mulching and native planting.”
Ms Markula said the group was looking forward to the event.
“We have a regular group of volunteers and are always happy for new people to come along and join a working bee,” she said.
“It provides opportunities for local residents to help their environment – to connect with nature, meet like-minded people and feel like you are making a difference.”
For anyone looking to attend, Ms Markula said make sure to bring “a hat, water bottle, long pants, covered shoes, sunscreen and gloves if you have them.” A morning tea will also be provided after the working bee.
Slacks Creek Catchment Group’s tree planting day will be held from 8.30am-10.30am on Sunday 19 April at Riverdale Park, Meadowbrook.
