AS the flood waters recede the clean-up begins.
For most it means a return to life as it was but for many others who are impacted by the flooding there is a long road ahead.
The flooding is the worst the City of Logan has seen since 1974 and we know that the recovery will take time and is a team effort.
Recovering from events like this is not a straightforward process – there are many elements to consider.
While the floodwaters may have disappeared, unfortunately the stagnant water left behind combined with the hot and humid weather present the perfect conditions for mosquito breeding.
This presents a significant public health threat from mosquito-borne viruses, especially as it coincides with the emergence of the Japanese Encephalitis virus (JEV) across Austrlalia for the first time.
At this point in time there have been no cases of JEV reported locally, however council has moved to implement a proactive mosquito management campaign.
Council has sought advice from the Queensland Health entomologists and taken the approach: Prevention is better than cure.
We will be ramping up efforts to survey and treat mosquito sites across the city through various methods including drone technology.
We have pest management specialists who can work with residents in flood-impacted areas to provide advice and support to help minimise the risk of mosquito-borne diseases.
Be vigilant and take any steps possible to limit potential mosquito breeding on your own property and it is also a timely reminder to protect yourself from mosquito bites.
As a city we have dealth with so much over the past few years and the way in which the community has responded is truly inspiring.
I want to see our city bounce back and restore the way of life for our residents.
There has been an amazing response and if you or anyone you know needs help, please I encourage you to reach out.
Whether it be contacting council or your local councillor, or making use of one of the recovery hubs – there is help there.
