New training at Logan Hospital to keep staff safe in conflict

Logan Hospital has introduced face-to-face Maybo training for staff to help them de-escalate potentially dangerous situations.

Senior Safety WVA Consultant Toni Connolly said the hospital encouraged staff to engage with and participate in the program.

“The aim is to help staff recognise risks early, respond with confidence, and de-escalate situations before they become physical,” Ms Connolly said.

“Hospitals can be challenging places to work, and Maybo equips staff across different roles and services with the knowledge and skills to reduce conflict and safely manage behaviours of concern.”

Up to nine staff members can be trained per session.

The World Health Organisation reported that an estimated 8 to 38 percent of healthcare workers globally experience physical violence at some point in their career.

Healthcare workers involved in patient care, like emergency department workers, nurses, and paramedics, are most at risk of verbal or physical violence.

According to the Maybo website, the number of sessions required to equip staff with the necessary skills varies, depending on their healthcare role.

Courses like ‘Conflict Management and Personal Safety’ can be completed online in under two hours, while in-person courses can take up to eight hours over multiple sessions.

Maybo’s training modules are used by a range of healthcare providers in the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia.
