For the last week I’ve been Acting Mayor while Mayor Jon Raven and his family took their first holiday together in eight years. Honestly it gave me a new appreciation for how much work that bloke does.
As Mayor there are so many meetings to attend, and I know that my calendar was nowhere near as packed as Mayor Raven’s usually is.
I remember a few weeks ago he held 27 meetings in one day!
For me personally, my office is usually my ute. I tried to balance being in my division, and travelling around the rest of the city for my time as Acting Mayor.
On the first day I turned the first sod of a new Queensland Government social housing build in Springwood with Minister and local MP Mick de Brenni.
They’re building 16 accessible units for locals who need to downsize and construction should be done by next year. I also had a great sit down with Mick to chat about what’s happening in his area. He’s really passionate about Council helping made local roads safer in Division One.
He wasn’t the only politician I caught up with though.
Federal Member for Wright Scott Buccholz and I visited the new Jimboomba Thunder football club. The Scene Rim Regional Council Mayor Tom Sharp and I checked out the rail trail head in Beaudesert.
Another day I managed to sneak away from the office to watch Marsden State High School take on Mabel Park in a local rugby league battle.
I also got to share posts about the many gold medals Logan’s Mollie O’Callaghan won in the pool.
It couldn’t be all about sport though. I announced the upcoming Flame BBQ Street Festival in Jimboomba on September 21 – with tickets limited and on sale now.
And next door to Council’s administration building on Wembley Road is the Logan Entertainment Centre. For the whole week, Quota Beenleigh were running their Eisteddfod there.
I dropped in to help sort out some ribbons with the ladies at the front desk, before I got a backstage tour from Margaret.
She told me that there were more than 60 schools taking part in the week-long dance competition. Some days featured more than 100 performances! The kids were so talented and it was a really positive atmosphere.
What an action-packed week!
