Movember raises the right awareness

Movember is a time to raise awareness of men’s health issues such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men’s mental health.

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer diagnosed in men in Australia and the third most common cause of cancer related death. It is estimated that around 18,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in Australia this year alone.

It is more common in older men, with more than 63 per cent of cases diagnosed in men over the age of 65 and one in 6 men diagnosed with prostate cancer by the time they are 85.

Early detection and treatment can significantly improve prostate cancer survival. It is vital that men over 50 learn the symptoms of prostate cancer and reach out to their GP if they have any concerns.

As we marked the start of Movember patients with non-metastatic castration resistant carcinoma of the prostate were able to access Nubeqa® (darolutamide) under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) for the first time.

Without this PBS subsidy, around 1,000 patients may pay more than $40,000 per year for treatment. Instead, they will pay a maximum of $41.30 per script or $6.60 with a concession card.

Medication alongside early detection can save lives and protect lives. I encourage you to start a conversation with your mates and spread awareness not only during Movember but all year round.
