Discover warm wonders in west Logan this winter

The skies are starting to turn cloudless and blue, which can only mean winter is well on its way. With the days getting shorter and the mornings colder, take some time to discover some fantastic local initiatives and businesses to keep warm this winter.

  1. Get a hold of a warm, comfortable blanket, or get creative and make your own

What’s more comforting than a warm, possibly heated blanket? One that you have put together yourself. Experiment with online tutorials, or head over to The Quirky Quilting Co at Springwood to choose your own materials in person and take a few classes. In the cozy June weather, you can both a comfy hobby to keep yourself busy with and a new blanket.

2. Spend a rainy day at the library

Libraries are quiet and warm spaces to enjoy during winter. Whether you enjoy getting to know new people within the community, or prefer some quiet reading time, Logan City Libraries has branches at Browns Plains, Greenbank, Jimboomba and Marsden. The library obviously has books, but also free Wi-Fi and community events, this is a good idea for students, families or anyone interested in a relaxing day out of the house this winter.

3. Nourish your soul
Located on Anders St at Jimboomba, Defenders Soul Kitchen is an affordable and homely café that is involved in addressing food insecurity and helping out those who are facing homelessness or financial hardship. Defenders offer a welcoming indoor space where you can enjoy a hearty and hot breakfast or lunch and participate in their “pay-it-forward” system, where you can purchase a warm meal for a neighbour in need during the cold months. Another fantastic initiative of Defenders is their focus on creating a welcoming space for all people from all walks to gather, helping to reduce loneliness among the vulnerable.

4. Get your body moving
Don’t let the cold weather keep you at home, check out PCYC Crestmead on Gimlet Street to keep your body moving. Physical activity is one of the most effective ways to generate natural body heat and this local hub provides a safe, indoor space for locals to stay active. As a community-focused organisation, PCYC provide various sports and programs for all ages and offers a great way to stay warm and socially connected.
