Racers from around Logan will be revved up this week, as they tackle the Australian Hillclimb Championship at the Mount Cotton circuit.
The Australian title returns to Mt Cotton from Friday, after with drivers facing one of the most competitive fields in recent years.
While the fastest times of the weekend are expected to come from the Formula Libre cars, including Logan’s Neil Lewis in his FLY-001 open wheel racer, Richard Mattea, of the MG Car Club of Queensland, said there will be a number of fast sedan-based entries on the weekend.
“The Formula Libres, combining light weight, big power and incredible aerodynamics, will be the fastest cars of the weekend, but expect a number of sedan entries to run under the 40-second mark,” Mr Mattea said.
“There are a number of Logan drivers who are expected to challenge for class wins, as well as the honour of setting new lap records across the weekend.”
This includes Ford Escort racer Danny Mischok, in the 2000cc Improved Production class, who claimed the Queensland title in June, as well as Daniel Anderson, Luke Weekes and Grant Taylor, racing his Volkswagen Golf sports sedan.
Others expected to feature in the results are Woodridge-based husband and wife team of Ken and Pauline Graham in their 2.4-litre Datsun 1600, with Pauline also challenging for the Ladies title, and open wheel racer David Quelch.
“Mt Cotton is an incredible ‘double loop’ circuit, covering 946 metres, with some truly fearsome, including ‘Lovers Leap’, where cars regularly get airborne through the corner, before plunging down to the hairpin bend at Queensland Nut corner,” Mr Mattea said.
“This features a bunker filled with nut shells, which trap cars if they don’t make the corner, they reach up to 175 km/h in just 150 metres, it is an amazing sight, before blasting back up the hill to the finish.”
Drivers will have a total of eight runs over the weekend, after practice runs on Friday, although Mr Mattea said the winner is the fastest time of the weekend, although he said the track is quickest later in the afternoon.
“After being heated by the sun all day, the air is just starting to cool, making that the ideal time, but we have seen some of the quickest times set on the first run of the day.
“Hillclimbs are unique, because the driver is racing against the clock, other drivers in their class, and ultimately to be one of the fastest of the weekend, with just a single lap of the circuit, it tests skill and speed.”
The Australian Hillclimb Championships run from Friday October 21 to Sunday October 23, with racing from 8.30am each day, at the Mt Cotton Hillclimb Circuit, Gramzow Rd, Mt Cotton, enter from Mt Cotton Road.
