During one week in June, a Buccan local will take part in this year’s Ration Challenge to highlight the plight of refugees.
Music teacher Angus Davidson (37) will receive a ration pack containing the same rations, in the same quantities, as those distributed to refugees – just a small amount of rice, beans, chickpeas, lentils, fish, oil and flour.
The money raised will go towards providing food, clothes, shelter and medicine for the 100 million refugees who have been forced to flee their homes because of war, including those in Ukraine.
Mr Davidson says ultimately, the aim of the challenge is to give back.
“Doing the challenge is a choice I have made for myself but for many refugees there is no decision making,” he said.
“I feel for the refugees and I sort of felt like if I could do a little bit to help it would be for a worthy cause.
“It humbles me to think that people are forced to survive off this when it is so easy for me to take for granted where my next meal will come from.
“It’s a great way to actively do something for a good cause, rather than just make a donation.”
Mr Davidson says he has already been blown away by the support he has received.
“I initially set my goal at $500 and I met that so I’ve now bumped it up to $750.
“Through the charity they have set up ‘teams,’ so our little team has a Facebook messenger chat and we have been sharing recipes and ideas.”
The Ration Challenge first started in 2014 as a fundraising initiative of Act for Peace.
The challenge will take place on Sunday, June 19 to Saturday, June 25 and you can donate here.
