Nursing homes across the state have implemented inclusive 30-minute dance classes to their weekly schedules, which are designed to get residents moving.
Lutheran Services, which is delivering the classes, said the staff running the sessions had undergone training in “evidence-based therapeutic movement initiative called DanceWise.”
Michael Russel, a lifestyle facilitator at the Lutheran Services Woodridge location, said residents had responded to the sessions “enthusiastically.”
“Residents enjoy the classes just as much as the staff enjoy delivering them,” Mr Russell said. “It’s great to see a room full of smiles.”
Residents with conditions like dementia, stroke, Parkinson’s, arthitis or who have limited mobility can participate and enjoy the classes, Mr Russell said.
“We’re hearing from families that their loved ones are showing noticeable improvements in their
mood and energy levels when they start their day with a DanceWise class,” Mr Russell said.
Not only are DanceWise classes designed “to enhance mobility, balance and cognitive function for older adults,” they also build social connections and can improve the emotional well-being of residents.
At another Lutheran Services location in Rockville, resident Fay Cronk said the easy-to-follow classes kept her active and were fun.
“The classes are so much fun,” she said. “I always feel refreshed and energised afterwards.”
