Logan’s Seniors Big Day Out gets new name — and a new format

Logan’s long-running Seniors Big Day Out will return with a new name and format this October, as the city’s older population continues to grow.

“The Logan Seniors Big Day Out has been a favourite for many years, and we’re excited to give it a fresh new chapter,” Logan mayor Jon Raven said.

The event will become The Silver Series: Seniors Connect, combining free activities and community information with a separately ticketed stage show at Logan Entertainment Centre on Wednesday, October 7.

Cr Raven said the revamped event was intended to reflect the range of interests among Logan’s older residents.

“Logan’s diversity isn’t just about where you’re from or what you believe, it’s also about what you love to do and how much experience you’ve had in life,” he said.

The change comes as Logan’s senior population grows.

The council’s Community Infrastructure Plan says 18.3% of Logan residents were aged over 60 at the 2021 Census.

The city’s 70-to-84-year-old population grew by 8121 people between 2016 and 2021 — the largest numerical increase of any age group.

The council’s current event program lists two sessions on Wednesday 7 October.

The first begins with a free activity from 9am before a 10am paid performance, while the second starts with a free activity at noon before a 2pm show. Book tickets to the show via Logan Arts.

Free activities will include line-dancing lessons, information about council services and opportunities to meet local community organisations.

The entertainment component, Daniel Mallari’s The Popera Show, will be separately ticketed and feature songs associated with Andrea Bocelli, The Righteous Brothers and Robbie Williams.

Refreshments will also be available for purchase from the Limelight Café.

The council has increasingly used its seniors programs to promote social connection alongside access to services and information, including efforts aimed at reducing isolation.
