Hundreds of locals make life-changing impact

Children like Chansouk, a nine-year-old girl from Lao in south-east Asia, can see again thanks to the donations of almost 1000 locals.

Logan residents have donated almost $234,000 to The Fred Hollows Foundation so far this year, helping restore site to those living with avoidable blindness around the world.

Around 120 of these donors gave to the charity for the first time.

Donations have gone towards changing the lives of people like Chansouk, who was able to receive a surgery that restored her sight.

She was on the verge of blindness after getting a traumatic eye injury from a fire.

According to the foundation, many children in Lao remain untreated because there are only four eye doctors for every million people.

Founding director Gabi Hollows expressed her gratitude to the Logan community for their support.

“Unfortunately, avoidable blindness is increasing globally, but we know that nine out of 10 cases of blindness and vision impairment are preventable or treatable,” Ms Hollows said.

“We can do something about it. The Fred Hollows Foundation has restored sight to more than three million people and we won’t stop until we achieve our mission of ending avoidable blindness.

“We wouldn’t be able to restore sight to as many people here in Australia and around the world without the generosity of our community.

“Thank you to the people of Logan for allowing us to carry on Fred’s vision of ending avoidable blindness.”
