There is something really special and unique about election days in Australia.
It goes beyond the democracy sausages – as big of a role as they do play.
Election days in Australia, probably more so than anywhere else in the world, are community days.
They are an opportunity for everyone in our community – and communities right across the nation – to come together and have their say on the future of our country, regardless of their background.
And on Saturday the Australian people voted for change.
While there are still many seats which are being counted, it is clear that Federal Labor will form government with Anthony Albanese as the next Prime Minister of Australia.
I am incredibly humbled to be returned as the Federal Labor Member for Rankin and on Monday, I gained a further responsibility as the 41st Treasurer of Australia.
While this additional responsibility is an incredible honour, I will not consider myself the Treasurer who happens to be from Logan.
I will always consider myself to be a Logan kid who happens to be the Treasurer.
To the residents of Logan and the southern suburbs of Brisbane which comprise Rankin, thank you for putting your faith in me for another three years.
I am so proud to represent a community that looks out for each other and looks after one another.
It is a privilege to represent the community that I was born in, raised in, live in, where my kids are growing up and that I love, in the national parliament.
The work of building a better future for our local community, and the country, starts now.
I will spend every day of the next three years working to ensure we have a stronger, more vibrant local community.
