Hare Krishna community celebrates 50 years in Brisbane with new temple opening

Brisbane’s Hare Krishna community opened a new temple last month, marking 50 years since Sri Sri Gaura Nitai, two of the religion’s deities, were first worshipped in the city.

From 27 February to 3 March, Brisbane’s International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) hosted a week of celebrations to coincide with Gaura Purnima, a major festival in the Hindu calendar.

The event commemorates the birth of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, a 15th-century spiritual leader whose teachings focused on devotion, compassion and chanting the names of God.

For those unfamiliar with the tradition, chanting (known as kirtan) sits at the heart of the celebrations.

It involves call-and-response singing accompanied by drums and hand cymbals.

Devotees believe repeating sacred mantras helps focus the mind and deepen their connection with the religion.

Visitors didn’t need prior knowledge to take part; many simply sat, listened or joined in.

The golden jubilee honoured 50 years of worship of Sri Sri Gaura Nitai, sacred figures representing Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and his companion Nityananda.

In Hindu temple practice, these figures are displayed as deities and cared for through daily rituals that include singing, prayer, offerings of food and flowers, and moments of quiet reflection.

The week also included spiritual talks, ceremonial worship and shared meals.

Organisers said the new temple, located at 8 Lee Road in Darra, will provide a larger, dedicated space for gatherings, festivals and educational programs.

The current temple is located at 2705 Ipswich Road in Darra, only a two-minute drive from the new location.

The celebrations were open to the broader community, and organisers said they hoped the week was both a religious observance and a chance to welcome people into a space centred on music, reflection and shared celebration.
