Homemade bombs, theft and vandalism are running rampant across the south-east of Logan, prompting concern from local residents and a councillor.
There have been reports of plants stolen from Beenleigh Cemetery, garden beds damaged at Eagleby community gardens, a flood marker graffitied at Logan River Parklands, copper fittings stolen from Chris Green Park, field nets vandalised at Eagleby Giants rugby club, and BBQs tampered with at parks.
One Eagleby resident had her letterbox blown up by what is believed to be a homemade bomb, while a local early learning centre lost their community library to a mysterious fire.
“Thursday night last week I was just sitting there on the couch, and I heard a noise, I saw flash and I thought: there has been an explosion” Dowling Crescent resident Jo Rose said.
“I looked out the window and couldn’t see anything, but I didn’t go out there in case someone was still lurking – I watch movies and if you go out, you don’t come back.”
It turns out Ms Rose’s letterbox had been “blown to bits”.
She called emergency services, who she said found “a lot of tin foil”.
“It was just a mess,” Ms Rose said.
“There was something that was in there which I can’t talk about – but it was meant to hurt somebody.
“I don’t know why they picked my letterbox, because I’ve got nothing against anybody, and I don’t think anyone has anything against me.
“I think it was just random – they were testing.”
Ms Rose now has a new letterbox.
Local councillor Karen Murphy echoed residents’ concern, claiming the vandalism was “disheartening”.
“We’ve seen a troubling rise in crime across Division 12,” Cr Murphy said.
“We all take pride in our beautiful neighbourhood, and it’s clear that this needs to stop.”
Cr Murphy said police and council officers had done “everything possible”, so she was turning to the local community for help.
“If you see something suspicious or have any information about these incidents, please report it to the authorities or contact my office at [email protected],” she said.
“You can also reach out to Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.
“Together, we can help prevent further incidents and keep our community safe and vibrant.
“Let’s come together to protect what we all care about.”
