Gallery in the Corridor in Beenleigh is an art gallery for local artists, and it’s run by local artists.
In its ninth year, The Gallery in the Corridor is located in the Beenleigh Historical Village in the Saverin House built in the 1800s.
“The gallery itself is in one of the old heritage homes, and as with all the buildings in this village it’s from the Beenleigh District,” artist and gallery volunteer Tony Hunter said.
“It makes a wonderful setting to all the beautiful artworks on the walls here.”
Mr Hunter said The Gallery in the Corridor started due to a lack of galleries between Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
“There were no galleries of note between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, it was an empty corridor and there was a lack of places to showcase local artworks,” he said.
“We now can encourage local artists to showcase their art which includes pottery and woodwork, homemade items, knit ware, paintings, decorative eggs and carvings.”
Mr Hunter said the gallery is run voluntarily by the artists who display their work.
“The gallery gives people the chance to make full use of their talents once semi-retired or retired, but we have other age groups too,” he said.
“The gallery is run voluntarily by all the artists that exhibit here, so any day of the week you can meet the artist of the day.”
Mr Hunter said local and international students come through the village regularly to learn about the history of Beenleigh and also enjoy the artwork.
“Just about each day a school bus visits the village, and the kids love coming through this gallery looking at all the paintings and handmade objects,” he said.
“We had some Japanese students come in not long ago and it was great to see them enjoying the artwork and many of them took trinkets and handmade objects home to show their families.”
Mr Hunter said the Beenleigh Historical Village is a great family day out.
“Our gallery adjoins the original Beenleigh Railway Station, which is now a café (Tin Cup Café) and a great place to meet up with friends for coffee and then wander through the gallery,” he said.
“There are also the museum tours, the fire engine shed and so much for the family to do.”
“We are very fortunate to have the support and backing by the historical village committee, who are always happy to assist with our gallery.”
Mr Hunter said all the artwork on display is available for purchase.
