Birthing mums can load up on sushi just moments after delivery thanks to a new app to assist hungry patients at Logan Hospital.
Senior dietitian Lisa Prineas said the hospital’s new meal-ordering program allowed maternity-ward patients to order food from a virtual menu using a form called App.
Following a trial period that saw over 370 meals ordered, the program was considered a success and is now used regularly.
“The program is an excellent example of the collaboration that took place between a variety of hospital staff and consumers,” Ms Prineas said.
“Significant consumer feedback was sought prior to the rollout of the App, particularly regarding the patients’ preference to use their mobile phones that connected to the hospital’s free WiFi, or a ward phone to order.
“Consultation was also undertaken with the Health Equity and Access Team to ensure the App was easy to use and read as well as culturally appropriate.”
While the program was specifically designed for Logan’s maternity unit, it could soon be rolled out hospital wide.
Meanwhile, the Logan Hospital expansion project has achieved another milestone with the opening of building three.
A new education centre, medical common room and internal medicine offices recently moved into the building and will be followed in the coming weeks by the inpatient units and clinical departments.
The education centre on level seven is the new home of the nursing and midwifery practice development unit, the medical education unit, the simulation centre and library.
The former medical common room will be repurposed to become part of the hospital’s mental health department.
The facilities will support the learning and development from staff across the hospital, Metro South Health said.
