Construction for Logan Indoor Sports Centre underway

Demolition has started at the former PCYC site at Logan Central to prepare for the construction of one of Queensland’s largest multi-purpose indoor sports centres in time for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The nine-court Logan Indoor Sports Centre will have capacity for up to 7000 spectators.

The works mark the first stage of redevelopment at the site, next to the Logan Entertainment Centre on the corner of Jacaranda Avenue and Democracy Way.

During the Games, the centre is expected to host indoor events such as ball sports, boxing, martial arts and Para sports, although the final allocation of sports has not yet been confirmed.

After the Games, the centre will be used by local schools, sporting clubs and community groups.

Federal Treasurer and Member for Rankin Jim Chalmers said the centre would help meet growing demand for indoor sports facilities in Logan.

“A nine-court venue capable of holding 7000 spectators will change the face of sport in Logan and make a real difference for thousands of kids who will play and compete here,” he said.

The project is part of the $7.1 billion Games Venues Infrastructure Program, which includes 17 new and upgraded venues across Queensland.

The program is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland governments and is being delivered by the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority.

Federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King said the centre would act as a community hub during and after the Games.

“Growing communities like Logan are built around hubs like this new indoor sports centre, which will provide a place for the community to come together during the Games and beyond,” she said.

Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie described the start of works as a key milestone in delivering Games venues across the state.

City of Logan Mayor Jon Raven said it marked “the start of a new era for the site” and said the venue would be well used by the city’s fast-growing community.

Planning and approval processes are continuing, including environmental approvals under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.

A principal design contractor for the Logan Indoor Sports Centre is expected to be announced soon.

Federal and state representatives said the project would increase indoor sporting capacity in Logan and provide long-term community access to the facility.

Construction timelines beyond the demolition phase have not yet been publicly confirmed.
