Clock is ticking on the landfill battle

The wheels of bureaucracy are never noted for moving overly quickly, particularly when they require collaboration and cooperation among different authorities.

The state government has announced that money is available for innovative recycling solutions, and the work Logan City Council has been doing with sister authorities can only augur well for a piece of the $80 million pie.

Landfill is a massive issue. With population increases in the vicinity of more than 30% expected over the next 20 years, that means huge increases in waste.

More importantly, there will be fewer places to put it.

This is one issue which cannot afford the usual delays which come with red tape.

And credit where it’s due for our council which has managed to introduce multiple innovative solutions in recent years to tackle our carbon footprint.

We’ve boosted our use of solar, feeding into the city’s energy supply network.

And the biochar project at Loganholme Wastewater Treatment Plant is an Australia-first solution for managing the city’s biosolids.

In other words, we’re the first in the country to make our poo useful for farmers by turning it into a form of fertiliser.

Let’s also understand that it’s never a bad thing to put your hand up for help – in this case we’re calling on the Local Government Association of Queensland to go into bat on our behalf.

If that means more money for projects which propel our region forward in the race against waste, than that’s been a great outcome.
