Call for donations to fund homeless youth accommodation

Anglicare is raising funds for a youth accommodation complex in Beenleigh that is expected to break ground early next year.

The 30-unit building will provide 24 studio apartments and six one-bedroom apartments to  nearly 50 local youth aged aged 16-25 who are either homeless or at significant risk of homelessness.

It’s set to cost $13 million, and once complete, will be staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and include units for couples and small families.

So Anglicare is turning to the community for support.

“We are calling on the community to donate to this important cause as every dollar raised will go directly towards the building and operation of the new youth homelessness service in Logan, helping to create a stronger, more supportive community for those most in need,” Anglicare southern Queensland CEO Sue Cooke said.

“We believe that no young person should ever have to face Christmas without a place to call home.”

Nearly one-quarter of homeless people in Australia are aged between 12 and 24, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Around 122,000 people, including 30,000 young people, will be without a home this Christmas.

“The 30-unit accommodation project is designed to support young people aged 16-25, who are either homeless or at significant risk of homelessness,” Ms Cooke said.

“This is part of our broader commitment to addressing the rising number of young people in crisis, and we are counting on the generosity of the community to help make this project a reality.”

The Manila Street facility will also provide vital services to help youth “rebuild their lives”.

“We know that homelessness is not just about having a roof over your head,” Ms Cooke said.

“It’s about giving young people the resources, skills and connections they need to build a better future.

“This Christmas, every donation will bring us one step closer to providing a safe haven for our young people who need it most.”

The location of the block on Manila Street was chosen for its close proximity to public amenities including shopping centres, business and civic centres, a local sports centre, public green spaces, and public transport.
