There are quite a few cafes operating around Logan that only cater to the morning and lunch time working crowd, not offering meals at night.
Mi Casa Cafe along Logan Road at Underwood is an exception, opening most nights until late.
It’s a big commitment from any cafe that opens at 6am for breakfast.
It become immediately evident that the staff here are keen to help and make the dining experience a pleasant one.
Decor is stark in its simplicity, with modern cement walls allowing the retro colour scheme of the booths to shine.
While there have been subtle changes to the menu over the cafe’s time in existence, including price, there’s one thing that hasn’t changed, and that’s the Nutella waffle which comes smothered in the stuff.
Fans of Nutella will tell you it comes in bottles of many kilos, and many different sizes, and having seen the Mi Casa version, we’re sure they’re investing heavily in bulk buy.
You’ll need the strawberries, banana and vanilla ice cream to cut through the chocolate, and perhaps even to help restore movement into your jaw after slicing through a piece of thickly covered waffle.
The shop does have “real” food, the kind nutritionists tell us is important, but first it’s worth drawing attention to the smoothies which have an interesting addition of sorbet.
It seems at first they’re just creating an extra dessert option, but it really works. It adds a smooth tone which is slightly different to the normal yoghurt or alternative thickener which is usually added to the fruit blend.
It’s a real pick-me-up.
If you’re not in the mood for sugar overload, there are various burgers on the menu and traditional mains for dinner.
But the creativity kicks in for the morning menu, where you’ll find Chimchuri poached eggs with haloumi, babaganouche and ras el hanout on toasted turkish bread.
There’s Morroccan eggs, banana French toast, a Persian version of poached eggs, or a big breakfast with a slight twist which the cafe calls a “Sultan’s Platter”.
Accessibility really is the key to this restaurant. Any time of day, there will be groups of friends, or couples sitting around the booths or on the al fresco portion of the restaurant.
The area is growing quickly with new businesses popping up in refurbished office buildings.
Maybe they’re more likely to look for a lamb wrap, or one of the chef’s specials such as the “burger royale”, as opposed to the chocolate overload.
Never mind. It was hard to resist, and fun while it lasted.
