Blood Bikes a force to be admired

Sometimes when you first hear a new idea, you cannot help but wonder why it has never been tried before, and that was my reaction when local motorcyclist Steve James approached me a few years ago to discuss the formation of Blood Bikes Australia.

Based on a concept that originated overseas, these volunteer riders use their own motorbikes to offer a ‘last resort’ service transporting blood and other urgent medical supplies.

I was so impressed by what Steve was proposing, that I was happy to help promote the concept and brought it to the attention of my colleague, the then health minister Greg Hunt.

Since it was first established in 2019 working with Brisbane’s Mater Pathology, Blood Bikes Australia has expanded across the country and now has almost 500 members who have made thousands of vital deliveries free of charge.

Due to the manoeuvrability of their motorbikes, these men and women are often able to go where others cannot, delivering blood, pathology, medicines, equipment, and other items for as many as 50 separate healthcare providers.

This is a wonderful example of Australians who are willing to help their communities by donating their time, skills and assets and asking nothing in return.

Blood Bikes Australia volunteers must abide by all road rules, including speed limits, and are required to complete a nationally recognised ‘Certificate in Blood Transport’.

I want to commend all the volunteers of Blood Bikes Australia, and if you wish to join their ranks or perhaps make use of their services, please get in with my office for more information or you can go to the Blood Bikes Australia Facebook page.
