Are dumplings the new chips?

Let’s have a think about dumplings.

They can be crispy, with a tasty soft centre. Or they can be a little mushy, still with a soft inner texture.

In a way, they’re a little like chips.

So why wouldn’t we be able to substitute dumplings for chips when cracking open a beer?

That’s what we’re being encouraged to do when we visit Little Red Dumpling at Chatswood Central Shopping Centre at Springwood.

There’s a big sign on the wall that says “Sip beer, consume dumpling”.

There’s much to be said for it. Not only do dumplings mimic the texture, but if we’re to throw our chip habits aside, they’re a fair bit tastier.

Dumplings have a variety of flavours and spices to tantalise the palate, they don’t need salt which means they’re healthier, and there’s an argument to say that the range of choice actually makes the beer taste better.

If you’re like the guy on the television ad who doesn’t like beer anymore, never mind – dumplings go with pretty much any beverage.

And if dumplings aren’t your thing, there’s a choice of noodles, lamb ribs and buns.

The Little Dumpling has new decor, is clean, and comes with great friendly service.

One of the best things is that most dishes are around the $10-$14 mark.

The Little Dumpling isn’t the type of place you’re going to settle in for a three-course meal. But it is trustworthy – the noodles and dumplings are made on-site every day, food is well presented, and the traditional approach to meals offers up a “comfort food” type feeling when digging in with a set of chopsticks.
