I often hear that mobile coverage and reception in pockets across Logan isn’t as broad as mobile coverage maps suggest. Factors such as mountainous or hilly terrain, buildings or other physical obstacles such as trees can severely degrade the actual level of on-ground reception.
To address these types of issues, the mobile network operators need to deploy additional mobile infrastructure. However, there is often limited commercial incentive for the operators. It is costly, offers low commercial return on investment and may require more than one base station to address localised issues.
This is why the Morrison Government has committed $16.4 million for the new Peri-Urban Mobile Program (PUMP) to deliver up to 60 new mobile solutions in peri-urban fringe areas, such as the southern and western suburbs of Logan City.
We know that improving coverage in these areas will help our communities access vital information during emergencies, seek help if needed and stay in touch with loved ones. It will also improve the quality and reliability of available mobile services, providing benefits on a day-to-day basis for those living and working in these communities.
To enable the program to target priority issues in the community, local Members of Parliament were invited to identify up to three locations within their electorate that may benefit from improved coverage. Following feedback received from local residents, I have nominated areas within Buccan, Cedar Creek and Logan Reserve.
Just last week the Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP joined me to visit impacted communities and hear firsthand the challenges faced by local residents.
