The family of murdered Parkinson couple Maurice and Zoe Antill have issued a succinct statement at the weekend.
“We appreciate the public concern for our loss,” they said via police.
“Maurice and Zoe were the most generous, loving and caring people who were deeply loved by their family and friends.
“The family is currently trying to come to terms with the senselessness and violence they suffered, and we ask that you allow us to grieve in private.”
The elderly couple in their mid-80s was murdered last week in what police said was a “terrorism event”.
Last Thursday morning, Raghe Mohamed Abdi, 22, was shot dead by police at Drewvale after police said he threatened them with a knife.
Police have linked the Antill’s murder with Abdi.
“We are treating this matter as a terrorism event,” Queensland Police deputy commissioner Tracy Linford said at a media conference.
Media organisations, including the ABC, have said Abdi was previously the subject of a terror investigation and had been influenced by Islamic State, stopped from leaving the Brisbane International Airport for Somalia in 2019.
He was on bail for minor offences and had been fitted with a GPS tracking device.
Deputy Commissioner Linford said: “We don’t want anybody to be killed by police but unfortunately, there are times when police are forced to use lethal force and yesterday was one of those occasions.”
ABC online reported last week that Abdi’s father Mohamed said his son “had some issues”.
“I believe I told them many times, my son needed a mental health intervention,” he told the news organisation.
“He told me he was always feeling harassed and followed.”
