You may not know what 3G means or what it does, but changes coming to many service providers across the country, including Telstra are about to affect many of us in the Forde Community, especially older, more vulnerable Australians whose mobile phones, alarms and medical alert devices rely on this technology.
At my recent Forde Seniors Expo, I spoke to the team from Telstra who informed me of the changes coming to their network and how that you could be affected.
What is 3G Technology? 3G Technology assists in making mobile phone calls, sending text messages and helping devices send and receive data and information. 3G has been around since 2006 but as the demand for data on our phones and other devices has continued to grow, technology has also evolved.
On Sunday 30 June 2024, 3G technology will be switched off across the country, so if you think you have got a device that solely works off the 3G Network, then you will need to ensure that you upgrade that device before the June 30 closure.
Technology that could be affected includes:
- Medical Alert Technology
- Baby Monitors
- EFTPOS Machines
- Mobile Phones (that don’t have the ability to use 4G or 5G)
The good news is you’ve got time to make the change and upgrade your devices.
If you are not sure whether your device will be affected by the changes being made to the 3G network, then drop into your local Telstra Store, or speak to the company or store where you originally purchased that technology or the device.
However, Telstra are ready and waiting to help you get prepared for the switch.
