The $13 million construction of Skate Paradise, formerly known as DIGI Roller Skating Rink or Skatetrader, is almost complete, and the grand opening is this Saturday 7 October.
The rink has moved down the road to 34-38 Johnson Rd Hillcrest, and manager Brad Worsman says it’s “bigger and better” than before.
“The owner bought the land a few years ago and now she’s finally built on it,” Mr Worsman said.
“It’s the first purpose-built skating rink in over 20 years – it’s an amazing venue.
“We’re doing the final touches on it now, like a few paint touch ups – the whole project has taken about a year.”
He said returning skaters would love the upgrades, while first-timers would be amazed.
“We’ve got double the amount of party rooms for birthday party bookings, we’ve got a bigger rink, a retro-style diner – it’s just bigger and better,” Mr Worsman said.
“At the old skating rink, we used to offer the snack bar – traveller pies, sausage rolls – but now we’ve got fried food and burgers.
“And it’s an 80s retro diner, with teal and pink colours to match.”
The new complex also boasts three levels and plenty of space, he said.
“There’s an underground carpark, on the first floor is the skating rink and diner, and on second floor are the offices, a bar and a pro shop for skate sales.”
He said it was for people of all ages and skill levels.
“There’s a lot of hype about the new rink in the skating community, but we’re hoping to reach out to people who might have only skated once before,” he said.
Skate Paradise will be open seven days a week.
Revellers can take up skating lessons from beginner to advanced or sign up for skate sports like hockey, speed skating and artistic skating.
Mr Worsman said the 7 October grand opening would be an action-packed day of fun.
“We’re going to open in the morning, and probably run our usual session times,” he said.
“We’ve already got birthday parties booked – they’re often booked months in advance.”
Until then, the rink is closed while hosting the 2023 Inline Hockey National Championships, which ends on Friday 6 October.
This competition consists of more than 500 skaters across twelve divisions, from under 9s to over 50s, competing for the national title.
Spectators are welcome and entry is free.
