Woman allegedly threatened with hatchet in tobacco break-in, man charged

Charges have been laid following an alleged armed robbery at a Loganlea tobacco shop, in which police allege a woman was threatened and two replica guns stolen.

According to a police statement, a man allegedly entered a tobacco shop on Logan Road armed with a hatchet, before threatening a female employee, smashing glass display cabinets and stealing two replica guns.

“CCTV footage of the incident was reviewed, and a subsequent investigation led officers to a nearby address on Fermont Road where a man was taken into custody and the replica firearms were recovered,” the statement read.

A 34-year-old Loganlea man was charged with one count each of armed robbery, possessing dangerous drugs, receiving tainted property, and authority required to possess explosives.

He is expected to reappear at Beenleigh Magistrates Court on August 27.

Detective Acting Inspector Adam Bennett praised the swift response and investigative work of the attending officers.

“This was a brazen and volatile offence committed in broad daylight, and thanks to the swift actions of our general duties crews, we were able to quickly identify and locate the alleged offender,” Detective Acting Inspector Bennett said.

“No one should be subjected to such threats and violence when at work, and we remain committed to holding offenders accountable to ensure the safety of both workers and the broader community.”

“This also highlights the importance of CCTV and other security systems in assisting police and enhancing community safety. We urge businesses to review their security measures and report suspicious activity to police.”
