What to know as we enter snake season

Eddie “Fast Eddie” Street who became a licensed snake catcher 10 years ago and runs Logan Snake Catcher said locals should know which snakes to look out for during snake season, which runs from September to April.

“The most common snakes in this area are the carpet python and the common tree snake, both of which are non venomous,” Mr Street said.

“The carpet python is a danger to small pets like cats and small dogs, so owners should be aware of that.

“The common tree snake is completely harmless, but you need to keep dogs away from them, because dogs can attack the snake and damage them.”

Two other types of snakes that locals should lookout for are the eastern brown snake and the red bellied black snake both of which are “really venomous” Mr Street said.

Other types of snakes found in the Logan area include the yellow face whip snake and the brown tree snake, which are both “slightly venomous” but not as dangerous as the eastern brown or red bellied black snake.

In Queensland, it is illegal for an non-licensced person to move a snake and it is illegal for a snake to be killed.

If you see a snake, do not touch or attempt to move it and call a licensed snake catcher right away, Mr Street said.

“You should call a licensed snake catcher like myself to come and remove it and relocate it,” Mr Street said.

“What’s important is to keep an eye on the snake until the snake catcher gets there, because they do tend to move around.”

Mr Street, receives up to seven calls per day from locals with a snake they need captured and released, into bushland far away from residential properties.

“Mostly snakes are in the garden but they can be under air conditioning units, or up in trees and occasionally snakes go into houses because people leave doors or windows open,” Mr Street said.

“That’s when it’s more dangerous, of course, but it’s easier to catch them because they’re they’re usually in one particular place.”

Mr Street said that there were many public misconceptions about snakes, including that they were aggressive or would try to chase you.

“A snake will never attack you unless you provoke it and by provoking, I mean trying to kill it or catch it,” he said.

“So the thing to do is just stay calm, a snake will never see you as prey so it won’t attack or chase you.”
