We can trust our librarians

In answer to the Yvonne S letter (MyCity Logan June 20-26):

Well meaning people need not be troubled about our community libraries as a source of potential harm for our children.

Our librarians are professionals who are eminently qualified to select books for a wide range of tastes within budget parameters.

The library is a safe haven, a knowledge and education hub as our councillor Tony Hall acknowledged in a wonderful speech recently.

I do not want amateur censors selecting my reading or my family’s reading.

A book that is sexually explicit to one person may be satirical or bawdy to another more sophisticated reader. As a reader for 70 years I can judge for myself.

You may be offended by a book at the library but there is no obligation to read it. Just put it back on the shelf and worry more about the internet as a source of explicit material.

Every family has the responsibility to know what their own child is reading or viewing and have regular discussions depending on age.

We do not have to follow blindly the fashion of banning books for personal or political reasons as some states in America do. Just trust our highly competent and caring librarians.
