Volunteer army ready for floods

When our city was impacted by flooding earlier this year the response from our community was overwhelming.

And as we once again head into our summer storm season council has been inspired by the response of our community to create the Logan Community Champion program.

The program will build a network of volunteers who are trained to support our city when disaster strikes.

Volunteers who join the program will not only help those in times of disaster but will also receive training to develop leadership skills. They will be tasked with managing and supervising volunteers during disaster recovery and will receive training in vital activities such as establishing evacuation centres and first aid.

We know from first-hand experience that the impacts of floods, storms and bushfires are far-reaching, and the recovery can take months or even years.

We saw earlier this year that people really wanted to help others in the community and the program will enable us to have a central point of volunteers for disaster recovery. Quite often in those early stages of recovery people don’t know how to get involved and this will help streamline the recovery efforts in Logan.

While we were still experiencing major flood levels earlier this year people in our community were ready to assist those impacted with the long recovery.

The people are the backbone of our city. The support and care shown for one and other during this time was remarkable.

The way in which our community mobilised to lead the recovery across the city is commendable, it truly was a community-led recovery. Once again this has highlighted the incredible resilience of our great city and how we all look out for each other when times are tough.

Council will be holding an information session about the Logan Community Champion program for those interested at the Marsden Library on Tuesday December 6. I encourage as many people as possible to get involved.

It is a wonderful way to give back to the community.
