Unfortunately, 2024 has been a difficult start to the year for many members of the community. Across Queensland and Logan City, we’ve seen the impacts of extreme weather such as heatwaves, cyclones, and floods. With more warm weather on the horizon, make sure you protect yourself and your loved ones by seeking shade, staying hydrated, and checking on pets, loved ones, and neighbours.
The Miles Government is committed to supporting Queenslanders, no matter where they live. If your property was damaged during the most recent round of weather events, you can apply for financial assistance or register your home for repairs through the you can check your eligibility for relief at https://www.qld.gov.au/community/disasters-emergencies/disasters.
In some better news, it has been a joy to see students heading back to school over the last week. Whether they’re excited prep students or those entering the last year of their schooling, I want to wish them all the best for the year ahead. Of course, I also want to thank our passionate teachers who work so hard to instil knowledge, courage, and compassion into our next generation.
Students and teachers will also get some much-needed relief from the summer heat, thanks to the work of the Queensland Government to install air conditioning in every single Queensland classroom, library, and staff room.
Excitingly, preppies across the state aren’t the only ones entering school for the first time this year. Thanks to the Miles Labor Government’s decision to make kindy free in Queensland, we have seen thousands of new kindergarten students enrolling.
We want every child to have the same opportunities when it comes to education, and this program is also giving Queensland families much-needed cost-of-living relief – with savings of up to $4,600 a year!
It’s also why last week we announced more than $6 million to help eligible families with the cost of sports, through the Queensland Government’s FairPlay program.
The program is offering over 40,000 vouchers valued up to $150 that can be used to pay for sports memberships, registrations, and participation fees. Applications are now open so if you have children aged between five and 17, you can apply here today: https://www.qld.gov.au/recreation/sports/funding/fairplay.
Whether you have been impacted by severe weather, want to know more about cost of living relief, or just want to check in, my team in the office at 22 Loganlea Road, Waterford West, is always here to help. Feel to drop by or call 3445 3100 to speak to one of my friendly staff.
I’m so proud to be representing our community and can’t wait for the busy year ahead.
