Two local basketball teams have claimed back-to-back state championship titles.
The Under 16 Girls and Boys teams this month battled it out against the state’s best.
For the girls’ team, which completed the entire 21-game tournament undefeated, the win earlier this week was an emotional moment both on and off the court.
“I am extremely proud,” the team’s coach, Jordan Chambers, said.
“I [have coached] some of them since I was 18 years old and they were Under 12. So we kind of grew up together.
“They hold a really big spot in my heart, that group of girls.”
The Queensland Championships is a four-day tournament, with both teams playing two games a day.
While the team was clearly dominant, certain games proved more challenging than others.
In the initial rounds of the four-day tournament, the girls played against the North Gold Coast Seahawks.
“They had actually got a 13-point lead on us in the first quarter, but we caught our way back up there and ended up winning by around 20 points in the end.”
The team also battled the Seahawks in the championship decider.
Even at their lowest point in this final match, the Logan girls were only down five points at the most.
In the end, the Logan Thunder retained their title with a 91-53 victory.
“They were super, super excited. We worked pretty hard all season long with some pretty tough training in there,” Ms Chambers said.
“It was a pretty big win in the end, but the Seahawks are always pretty competitive.”
Only days before the girls’ win, the Logan Thunder Under 16 Boys team claimed victory over their Gold Coast rivals, who they lost to earlier in the season.
“They won by 25 or 30 points in the end, too, and they were extremely well coached, ” Ms Chambers said.
“It was really awesome to get both the boys and girls two years in a row.”
