Thinking small for big gains in housing affordability

The owner of Teeny Tiny Homes is fielding 15 to 20 enquiries from Logan residents each month about his affordable and transportable “donga” homes.

David Antonacci, an ice sculptor and former restauranteur, turned his hand to sourcing, fitting out and transporting tiny homes after witnessing an increasing need for alternative housing options across Brisbane.

Based in Caboolture, Mr Antonacci said Beenleigh and Logan residents accounted for a
“large proportion” of his growing business.

“I answer 15 enquiries a day and I would say 15-20 of my enquiries per month come from Beenleigh and Logan,” Mr Antonacci said.

“In fact, the demand for affordable tiny homes from places like Logan are why I am absolutely slam dunked with work.

“I can barely keep up with demand.”

Mr Antonacci said the market for tiny homes was competitive, but he could price beat almost every other contender.

“Our homes are nice, they are well appointed and functional, but they are not the Ferrari of tiny homes,” he said.

“Thats why we sell them for $60,000 and not $80,000 to $130,000 like everyone else.

“In saying that, I can make your tiny home a Ferrari home if you have more money to spend.”

Mr Antonacci, who also owns niche ice carving business, Angel Ice, said his passion for “design, sustainability and out-of-the-box solutions” drove him to create the Teeny Tine Homes brand.

“I see tiny homes as the ultimate solution to the Australian housing crisis,” he said.

“I was inspired by the boom of tiny houses in the US and we decided to bring this wonderful idea to Australia.”

“Our demountable homes provide people with the opportunity to own their own home who couldn’t otherwise afford to.”

So, what will a Teeny Tiny Home set you back?

Mr Antonacci has housing solutions starting from as little as $49,555 for a 6m x 3m home, but you need to factor in where the home will be placed, costs of transportation, stumping, plumbing and electrical.

“I would say add another $10,000 onto that to get everything set up,” he said.

“Plumbing options vary and so the price of them vary too and it depends on where you’re putting the home whether you will have access to town water, septic or need a composting system.”

And if you move around a lot, a transportable home could be a good long-term solution.

“With a tiny home you can take your home wherever you go,” Mr Antonacci said.

“It is also a great solution for those who want to live off the grid and we get a lot of customers who enquire about that.”

Base product inclusions range from laminated flooring and porcelain tiles to timber decorative slats, timber window framing and a sliding glass door.

Optional upgrades include features such as a diamond grill security screen, induction cooktop, mini laundry tub and cabinet and built in wardrobes for the bedroom/s.
