Locals are invited to gather at Mandew Park in Shailer Park from 5pm on Monday 2 November for a vigil honouring 19-year-old Vana-Reese Schuster-Togiatau, who died after being shot outside Fitzys Loganholme.
The gathering at 21 Mandew Street will offer an opportunity for quiet reflection, condolences and prayers for Vana-Reese, her family and everyone affected by the shooting.
Police are also expected to attend to pay their respects and stand alongside the community.
The vigil comes as the tragedy continues to leave its mark across Logan, including on the Bethania boxing gym that organised the event where the shooting occurred.
SHDW Boxing, which staged the Logan City Titles at Fitzys Loganholme on 24 October, has announced it will remain closed for the foreseeable future.
Co-founders Brad Trevisan and Brenden Henwood announced the difficult decision in a Facebook statement, reflecting on the community they had built since opening in 2023.
“SHDW has always been so much more than just a boxing gym to us,” they wrote.
“It was a dream that we turned into reality, a place where friendships were made, memories were created and a community came together.”
The gym offered boxing and fitness classes for children and adults, with its founders reflecting on years of friendships, personal growth and sporting achievements.
But following the shooting, they said they needed time with their families.
“Following the recent tragic events, things simply don’t feel the same right now,” the statement read.
“We need to take this time to focus on our families, support one another and allow ourselves the space to navigate everything that has happened.”
The shooting claimed the life of Vana-Reese, a young Jimboomba woman who died at Princess Alexandra Hospital on Thursday 29 October, five days after being shot in the head and neck outside the Bryants Road hotel.
Three men, Zachary Uchtman, Kane Barrett and Brodie Blackwood, were also wounded.
Two had been discharged from hospital by Thursday, while the third remained there recovering from surgery.
Division 10 councillor Miriam Stemp said the shooting had shaken a community for whom Fitzys held many memories.
“Fitzy’s Loganholme has long been part of our local story and holds many fond memories for those who have celebrated special occasions or regularly visit with friends and family,” Cr Stemp said.
“To have something so tragic happen in a place that means so much to our community has been incredibly difficult to comprehend.”
For SHDW Boxing’s founders, the decision to close also means stepping away from something they had hoped would make a lasting difference.
“We started this gym with a dream of making a positive difference in our community, especially for the younger generation,” they wrote.
“Looking back at what we achieved together, we can proudly say that we made a difference, and that is something nobody can ever take away from us.”
They thanked the fighters, coaches, families, sponsors and supporters who had helped build the gym, but said they could not yet make plans to reopen.
“We don’t know what the future holds for SHDW Boxing, and right now we’re not in a position to make any plans to reopen.”
Meanwhile, more than 80 detectives have been working on the homicide investigation.
Police believe shots were fired from the front passenger window of a silver Mitsubishi ASX that stopped outside the hotel during an intermission in the boxing event.
The car was later found burnt out at Waterford West, with investigators examining its movements and those of another vehicle believed to have been involved in the getaway.
Detective Inspector Ian Galpin said police were determined to identify those responsible.
“We have not stopped and we will not stop until these people are identified and taken into custody,” he said.
Macalister MP Melissa McMahon said she was “absolutely devastated” by the young woman’s death and called on the community to support those affected.
“This is a time where we will be coming together as a community and wrap our arms around all those who have been affected by this tragic event,” Ms McMahon said.
“I ask that we respect the family’s privacy at this time and I urge any members of the public who have information that may be of assistance to come forward and assist police in their investigation.”
Fundraisers have also been established to support Vana-Reese’s grieving whānau and the recovery of those wounded.
As police continue their investigation, SHDW Boxing’s founders have asked for understanding as they put their families first.
“Our thoughts and prayers remain with everyone affected by the recent tragedy,” they wrote.
“From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for being part of our dream, for standing beside us and for making SHDW what it is.”
